UK technical textiles manufacturer Baltex has recently pivoted to start manufacturing face masks under its Airospring brand, using its 3D warp knitted spacer fabrics expertise. Airospring normally makes wheelchair cushions and mattress toppers, which represent a new standard in pressure relief products and are the result of extensive research carried out by the teams at Baltex Technical Textiles and The University of Bolton.
Airox AX100 is a textile face mask produced with the company’s well known 3XD Spacer fabric, which was developed for medical textiles. It is said to provide a snug fit and is breathable whilst offering protection to the wearer and others. The mask is treated with Polygiene’s Viral Off antiviral treatment.

“The mask fabric is made from polyester and Lycra and is treated with a durable water repellent finish to avoid the absorption of droplets. It is also anti-bacterial reducing odour and providing superior comfort compared to basic textile masks,” comments Managing Director, Charles Wood.
“Many masks are made from cotton and will absorb moisture and water droplets. Airox is different. It also works great as an outdoor sports face mask and can be used for pollen allergy, running, cycling, outdoor activities, woodworking and construction work.”

Specialist finishing treatments
Another Baltex subsidiary, Baltex Dyeing & Finishing (BDF) has the ability to treat both knitted and woven fabrics with anti-bacterial functionality. “Either direct supply or operating on commission finishing basis we can provide a full service which also includes dyeing and slitting. We also have the ability to treat gloves and masks,” the company explains.
“As part of the Advanced Surface Technology range of fabrics and treatments we would be happy to discuss any requirements you may have, a wide range of equipment allows us to offer small minimum runs. All fabric treatment manufacturing is located in the UK and REACH certified.”
“We are now working with our partners Polygiene AB based in Sweden on a finish called Viral Off which is effective against many viruses. Please note that tests have not yet been carried out against COVID 19. Evaluation of this product against COVID 19 is underway but previous viruses such as SARS were reduced by 99.90% using this treatment.
Queens Award for Enterprise
Baltex also recently announced that it has won the Queen's Award for Enterprise in the category International Trade. This is the third time the company has won the award.
