Woodspin – the partnership between natural fibre company Spinnova and the world’s largest wood pulp producer Suzano – has now selected a site and started the construction of its first plant in Jyväskylä, Finland.

Spinnova’s sustainable cellulosic fibre is expected to be available from the plant by the end of 2022 as a result of the €22 million investment and Woodspin’s goal is to be producing one million tons of it annually within ten years.

“We have created a modular and flexible technology that is easy to scale and set up around the world according to the pace of demand,” says Spinnova CEO and co-founder Janne Poranen.

Suzano is ready to increase the volumes of the raw material for Spinnova fibre to Woodspin – certified micro-fibrillated cellulose (MFC) – in line with these plans.

“We support the ambition to ramp up the production in our joint venture to more than one million tons of annual volume within ten years,” says Suzano’s new business executive officer Vinícius Nonino.

Spinnova has selected Valmet, a global leader in pulp and paper technology, as its partner for the supply of drying technology at the new plant.

“We want to support our customers in converting renewable resources into sustainable results, and being highly focused on R&D, we are a good technology partner for this project,” says Jari Vähäpesola, Valmet’s paper business president.
