Berlin-based knit studio BOI is presenting its new collection for sustainable knitted home textiles during this week’s Milan Furniture Fair (Salone del Mobile Milano). The studio, founded in 2022 by Goran Sidjimovski, is taking part in two events - Isola Design Gallery (Via Valtellina 5) and Sit, feast on your life (Via Carlo Boncompagni 51/10).
BOI knit studio and brand develops its own collection for home textiles and collaborates on special projects with interior and fashion designers. The design and development approach of the studio is driven by a trial and error and a hands-on mentality and aims to challenge the perception of knitted textiles. Sustainability plays a key role and is reflected throughout the design and production process.
Collection N°2 explores the delicate process of blending in from a social viewpoint. It observes the anxiety of not belonging, the attempt to fit in, the disappearing when finally blended into a pattern, and then leaving this pattern to form an own shape.
These observations are reflected into textiles pieces that don’t fit to each other, refuse to follow traditional patterns, distort commonality, and explore new paths to develop into a unique form.
The graphic development is a nod to traditional carpet and embroidery patterns, whose repetitiveness, basic geometric shapes and symmetry are distorted into abstract patterns.
Sustainability is in focus throughout the whole development and production process. All products are knitted directly to shape with less than 1% material waste. This waste is afterwards used as a filling material for seat cushions.
The materials include GOTS certified organic cotton, RWS certified wool, recycled viscose, hemp and silk. All products are knitted locally in Berlin and selected products feature hand stitching that is done as part of a social project with The NGO HOPS in North Macedonia that works with drug abusers and sex workers.
The palette features different shades of off-white and beige, whose tonality is disrupted with details in accent colours.
Salone 24
Industrial knitting and hand finishing processes meet to create this collection of 8 products with strong focus on sustainable development and production. The collection will be premiered during Salone 24 (15-21 April) at two locations:
- Isola Design Galllery @ Lampo Milano (Via Valtellina 5)
The Gallery’s layout this year is divided into different sections focusing on collectible design, designs with a narrative, industrial design, new craftsmanship, and contemporary bespoke products by independent designers and design studios.
Isola’s curatorial team, led by Elif Resitoglu, selected products that vary in design techniques and materials.
- Sit, feast on your life @ Dopo? Space (Via Carlo Boncompagni 51/10)
Sit, feast on your life is a hybrid installation-roundtable-dinner party. Featuring works from over 50 international creatives on a bespoke 10m-long table designed and handcrafted by Felix Pöettinger x EHAM, it explores the power of designed objects as a social binding force through exchanging ideas, sharing food, playing games and music.
