The 29th Global Textile Industry Survey (GTIS), conducted by the International Textile Manufacturers Federation (ITMF) in November 2024, reveals a nuanced picture of the global textile value chain. While short-term business sentiment has softened slightly, the industry continues its steady recovery from the significant challenges of recent years.

Among the regions surveyed, South America leads in optimism, with robust performance indicators supported by an increase in order intake. Africa has also emerged as a strong performer, demonstrating resilience and potential for growth. These regions contrast with Europe, which reported the weakest order intake, alongside the textile machinery segment globally.

Key trends and findings

Order intake and inventories

The survey notes a global improvement in order intake, driven largely by gains in South America. Inventory levels continue to decline across the value chain, although there are regional variations. Africa recorded the highest inventory levels, while the garment segment maintained the lowest.

Business confidence

Despite short-term dips, long-term business sentiment has improved significantly since the low point of November 2023. The industry remains cautiously optimistic, buoyed by the resilience seen in key markets like South America and Africa.

Concerns and challenges

The top concern remains global demand, though its intensity is gradually diminishing. Other key challenges include geopolitical tensions, high energy prices, inflation, and a persistent shortage of skilled workers and talent.

Order cancellations and backlogs

The trend of declining order cancellations has continued for 14 months, underscoring a stabilising market environment. The average order backlog, while slightly reduced, stands at 2.1 months, indicating a gradual recovery.

Graphs from the survey illustrate the global business situation and expectations, showing that despite short-term fluctuations, the overall outlook has improved significantly since late 2023. The industry is adapting to evolving challenges, including external pressures like energy costs and labour shortages, while leveraging opportunities in emerging markets.

The findings of the 29th GTIS emphasize the resilience of the global textile industry as it navigates a complex environment. Regions like South America and Africa are driving optimism, while global concerns are shifting from demand to broader economic and geopolitical factors.
