Rieter, a global leader in systems for yarn production from staple fibres, is celebrating its 230th anniversary in 2025. Founded in 1795, the company has evolved from a small trading business into a cutting-edge technology provider for the global textile industry

The company began its journey on 15 April 1795, when Johann Jacob Rieter established J.J. Rieter & Cie. in Winterthur, Switzerland. Initially dealing in exotic spices and cotton, Rieter quickly moved into textile production, receiving its first cotton bale just eight days later. By 1833, Rieter had transitioned into machine manufacturing, acquiring the former Töss Abbey to expand its operations, which eventually included spinning, knitting, and weaving machinery

Over the centuries, Rieter has been at the forefront of industrial change. It became a stock company in 1891 and continued to pioneer advancements in Swiss manufacturing. The introduction of electronic data processing, textile laboratories, prototype workshops, and testing facilities underscored the company’s commitment to innovation.

Today, Rieter leads a portfolio of specialised subsidiaries including Accotex, Bräcker, Graf, Novibra, Suessen, SSM, and Temco. Together, they deliver sustainable, high-performance solutions for yarn production worldwide. Through automation, digitisation, and intelligent system integration, Rieter aims to redefine the spinning mill of the future.

A key pillar of this vision is ESSENTIAL, Rieter’s digital platform for spinning mills, which plays a central role in the company’s ambition to achieve fully automated yarn production by 2027. With this transformation, Rieter supports its customers in lowering production costs and increasing efficiency while advancing sustainability across the textile value chain.

Rieter’s 4,800 employees remain vital to its enduring success. Their expertise and dedication continue to shape the company’s future and strengthen its leadership in the industry.

With more than two centuries of experience and an unrelenting focus on progress, Rieter stands poised to lead the next chapter in textile manufacturing.
