UK technical textiles manufacturer Baltex is introducing a new cooling phase change technology that increases the performance levels of a range of 3D spacer fabrics.
The new technology is being added to the company’s Advanced Surface Technology range.
Phase change materials (PCMs) absorb heat from the body of the wearer, retain it and release it back to the body when the temperature gradient is reversed. Heat is dissipated and a cooling effect is created. This is further enhanced by the airflow of the spacer fabric, creating a temperature regulating environment, keeping the body in its comfort zone.
PCMs instantly reduce the body temperature because the high thermal effusivity quickly draws heat away from the skin on initial contact and an instant cooling sensation is perceived. A smart heat exchange is realised by the microencapsulated PCMs, which keep the body’s heat production and heat loss in balance and provide a sensation of thermal comfort.
Moisture wicking and inherently anti-bacterial options are available and breathability of fabric is maintained because air and water vapour can continue to run through the fibre. The materials are also wash resistant.
Applications for the PCM spacers are envisaged in the healthcare military, equestrian, automotive, sports and furnishing sectors, as well as in helmet linings.
