Report summary

The latest update in this series of reports summarises the trends which were on show at the European yarn fairs for the Autumn/Winter 2019/20 season.

The author of the report visited Filo, Pitti Immagine Filati and Première Vision Yarns where she interviewed exhibitors and found out first-hand which trends were proving to be the most popular. The atmosphere at the European yarn fairs for the autumn/ 2019/20 season was upbeat—especially among companies serving the top end of the market—as knitwear continues to be a high fashion item.

At the fairs, there was a strong focus on light and fine yarns, and several spinners presented yarns which incorporated air spinning techniques. Fancy yarns, including chenille, bouclé and tape yarns, were especially important. Environmental sustainability continues to be a strong focus, and several spinners have adapted their production processes, and have introduced yarns which are made from traceable raw materials and incorporate recycled waste materials.

Natural fibres, including cashmere and mohair, were prominent and alpaca was especially important. These natural fibres were used in many creative combinations with other fibres—including polyester, polyamide, Tencel Lyocell and viscose. Several cotton spinners exhibited yarns which demonstrated their use of clever techniques and constructions for mixing cotton with a number of other fibres—including cashmere, micro-modal, silk and wool.
