Report summary
The latest update in this series of reports summarises the trends which were on show at the European yarn fairs for the autumn/winter 2022/23 season.
The fairs were held in a positive spirit, and there was a feeling that trade had begun to improve after being heavily impacted in 2020 by the COVID-19 pandemic. Opulent embellishments, heavy decorations and fanciful designs were plentiful, reflecting the general spirit of the trends for the autumn/winter 2022/23 season.
Indeed, the season is forecast to be particularly colourful compared with previous seasons and ‘maximalism’ looks set to be widely embraced. There was a strong focus at the fairs on natural yarns, and wool, alpaca, linen and pure cashmere yarns were especially important.
There was an emphasis on animal welfare, certification and traceability, and spinners were keen to promote yarns incorporating environmentally sustainable materials or yarns which had been produced using environmentally sustainable processes. Another key trend at the fairs was that of performance and comfort. This trend has been driven by an increase in consumer demand throughout the duration of the COVID-19 pandemic for apparel which is comfortable and suitable for wearing during athletic activities, leisure and work.
