This is certainly the case for Baladesh’s cotton yarn spinners, who supply the country’s Ready Made Garments (RMG) sector which is vital to many of the world’s leading clothing brands.

USTER Group, the leading high-technology instrument manufacturer of products for quality measurement and certification for the textile industry, offers its Total Contamination Control concept as the one-stop solution for achieving these objectives, even in the most challenging of market conditions, such as those faced by Bangladeshi cotton spinners.

Total Contamination Control is USTER’s special technology combination, effective thanks to its two-stage contaminant removal – at the start and finish of the mill’s operations, the company reports.

Cotton industry in Bangladesh

Unlike its neighbours, Bangladesh is not a major cotton-growing country. In fact, it is one of the world’s largest importers of raw cotton – a situation, which presents a unique set of problems, the company reports.

Sourcing raw material all over the globe means the Bangladeshi spinners have to cope with complex issues, such as dealing with wide variations in the type and degree of contamination in the raw cotton brought in from different countries.

Contamination is a priority issue for the yarn producers of Bangladesh, especially since the industry is keen to grow its exports. To achieve the objectives, spinners need to tackle all types of contamination head on.

Contamination control system

The first step is to prevent any unwanted foreign matter in the raw cotton from getting through to the spinning machines: this is controlled by the USTER Jossi Vision Shield, which identifies and removes contamination in the blowroom, right after the fine cleaner unit.

The second stage, completing the Total Contamination Control loop, comes in the winding room, when the spun yarn is checked by USTER Quantum 3 yarn clearers, in-process on the winders, providing a final monitoring stage for 100% of the yarn.

Bangladeshi RMG sector

The Ready-Made Garments (RMG) sector in Bangladesh has emerged as the biggest earner of foreign currency, experiencing an exponential growth since the 1980s. It mainly comprises of knit and woven garments competing to surpass each other for taking up the leadership within the economy.

It was in 2003-04 when the knit garments for the first time exceeded woven wear and became the leader in terms of quantity exports with 91.6 million dozens. And from 2007, knitwear continues to widen the gap with woven both in terms of value and quantity.

According to BKMEA, Bangladesh Knitwear Manufacturers & Exporters Association, knitwear is the highest contributor in terms of both gross and net export earnings. In 2010-11, the contribution of knitwear in national export earnings is 41.36%.

The core strength of the knitwear sector is its backward linkage. Over the period of time knitwear sector gradually became almost self sufficient in fabric and yarn. This improvement has become possible because of the integrated growth of spinning factories in line of the growth of country's stitching capacity and increased need of the yarn and fabric.
