A unique combination of quality measurement instruments and sophisticated software is at the heart of an evolution in spinning, says Switzerland’s Uster.

The company’s FiberQ is the essential starting point for ensuring absolute raw material consistency and the Uster Quality Expert (UQX) completes the picture by monitoring quality throughout the production process. By combining these two systems, spinners can achieve significant benefits in terms of both quality and profitability.

“Without an optimum raw material management solution it is very difficult and expensive to produce yarns with the necessary quality consistency,” says Stratos Fragkotsinos, Uster’s head of mill management solutions. “Even the best raw material will not achieve its maximum potential without reliable and consistent in-mill production processes.”

Industry 4.0 is becoming an increasingly important driver of progress in quality control for spinning – the most complex of textile segments with its multiple related process stages. Spinning companies also need reliable data collation and analysis if they are to operate profitably.

Raw materials account for up to 75% of production costs for spinners, so proper management and minimised waste are essential.

A standalone version of the UQX was launched as a software solution in 2020 and is said to deliver uncompromising standards in ultimate analysis, with unique value modules and fault prevention mechanisms. These support optimised settings, minimising outliers with immediate and reliable notifications – and with a direct impact on waste levels.

“Continuous in-process monitoring via the value modules of UQX will ensure trouble-free production, since variations in the raw material side are already at a minimum thanks to Fiber Q,” says Fragkotsinos.

Various case studies outlining the benefits and savings achieved by working mills with Fiber Q and UQX can be consulted on Uster’s website:
