A device for retaining needles (5) or needle drivers (6) in the axial slots (4) of the needle cylinder (3) of circular knitting machines for hosiery or other articles, comprising an annular element (2) which is elastically extensible and can be fitted around the outer lateral surface of the needle cylinder (3) of the circular knitting machine for hosiery or other articles, in the region of the needle cylinder (3) in which the axial slots (4) are provided which accommodate the needles (5) and/or needle drivers (6), the device further comprising a grip element (7), which is connected to said annular element (2) and defines a grip region (7a) designed to protrude on the opposite side with respect to the needle cylinder (3), the grip region (7a) being engageable in order to tension the annular element (7) away from the outer lateral surface of the needle cylinder (3).
