Unifi, Inc., the global innovator behind the Repreve brand, has launched a new range of biodegradable recycled polyester and nylon enhanced with CiCLO technology. The offering, unveiled at the Functional Fabric Fair (14–16 April 2025), represents a significant advance in synthetic textile sustainability.
Developed in partnership with Intrinsic Advanced Materials, a joint venture between Parkdale Advanced Materials and Intrinsic Textiles Group, Repreve with CiCLO technology introduces a patented additive at the fibre level. This enables synthetics to mimic the biodegradation of natural fibres like wool, breaking down in soil and seawater environments, without sacrificing durability, dyeability, or performance.
“Repreve with CiCLO technology is our answer to the global issue of synthetic microfibre pollution,” said Eddie Ingle, CEO of Unifi. “By embedding a proven biodegradable solution within our recycled yarns, we’re empowering brands to meet sustainability goals while reducing long-term environmental harm.”
Repreve with CiCLO biodegrades under prolonged exposure to moisture and microorganisms, reducing the persistence of microplastics in ecosystems. It is already being adopted by forward-thinking brands such as Bass Pro Shops, Billabong, Champion, Oakley, and Target.
Cheryl Smyre, Vice President of Parkdale Advanced Materials, highlighted the importance of collaboration in addressing industry-wide challenges. “This integration maximises recycled content while targeting fibre pollution at its source,” she said. “It’s a solution that supports performance, recyclability, and regulatory compliance all in one.”
All Repreve products, including Repreve Takeback and Repreve Our Ocean, can now be produced with CiCLO technology. The new range is available globally as a drop-in solution for mills, brands, and retailers.
Repreve and CiCLO will be showcased at Booths 815 and 712 respectively at the Functional Fabric Fair, held at the Oregon Convention Center.
